Though every Salesforce developer should have the freedom to experiment and develop in their own sandbox, most developers are faced with choice of working in a sandbox shared by others or testing their work with a minimal amount of data.
The problem is not a lack of sandboxes since Salesforce provides dozens of developer sandboxes with each production instance. The problem is the cost of setting up a developer sandbox filled with data suitable for the problem at hand.
In our shop it is both inexpensive and quick to setup a developer sandbox populated with a rich set of data tailored specifically for our current project. This talk will describe and demonstrate how we routinely set up a new developer sandbox and populate it with thousands of records from dozens of tables (in a matter of minutes). If time permits, approaches for migrating and splitting Salesforce instances will also be discussed.
