Heroku and the Polygot Platform by Dan Belwood

About this event

Heroku is the leading cloud platform for building and deploying social and mobile customer applications. Heroku led the way for multi-langauage PaaS and introduced the 'polyglot platform.' Built on open standards, Heroku supports multiple frameworks, databases, and languages—including Java, Python and Ruby. Developers love Heroku because they can leverage their existing skill sets, work with the tools they choose, and keep their focus on building amazing apps.

In the past, companies and developers have invested in a single, general-purpose programming language. Some downsides to this include the high cost of switching, using the wrong tool could decrease developer productivity, and Heroku’s Adam Wiggins relates it to “the law of the instrument,” which is an over-reliance on a familiar tool.

Today’s developers often try to become knowledgeable and utilize many languages effectively, or “polygot programmers,” but what has been missing is an infrastructure that embraces this idea. Beginning earlier this month, Heroku’s runtime stack allows for polygot development, where the choice of the programming language is simply a choice of syntax and libraries, and not how it runs, the services consumed or monitoring.
